Environmental
Health
New Jersey needs new pollution limits to protect public health. Currently, most
pollution limits in the state specify how much each polluter can release into
the environment, but fail to account for the health impact of this pollution.

The History Of NJPIRG
Clean Water Advocacy
Since its founding
in 1972, NJPIRG has focused on the quality of New Jersey's drinking water and
its rivers, streams and reservoirs. In that same year, Congress passed the Clean
Water Act in an attempt to clean up pollution in the nation's waterways. The
following year, NJPIRG founded the Clean Water Project to advocate for full
implementation of the goals of the federal Clean Water Act: reducing pollution
discharge into waterways, completely eliminating the discharge of toxics into
waterways, and returning all waterways to fishable and swimmable condition by
1983. More.
The History of NJPIRG
Lawsuits
Over the last
20 years, NJPIRG has used 53 citizen lawsuits to force the state's worst water
polluters to pay over $32 million in violations of the federal Clean Water Act.
