Ending Toxic Health ThreatsFor the last 20 years, the public has been able to learn about toxic chemical released to our environment by turning to the Toxics Release Inventory. The EPA has weakened the Inventory, reducing the number of industries who will report their toxic releases. This rollback is dangerous and unwarranted, and must be reversed.
To do just that, Congressman Pallone has introduced H.R. 1055 the "Toxic Right-to-Know Protection Act." Ask your Representative to cosponsor this important legislation.
Petition Text
The Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) has been one of the EPA's most successful programs, informing communities about the toxic risks they face and inspiring businesses to reduce their toxic emissions. For example, NJPIRG's analysis of the 2004 data found that over 17.5 million pounds of carcinogens, developmental toxins, reproductive toxins, suspected respiratory toxins, and suspected neurotoxins were released to New Jersey's air and water that year alone. And in its 18 year existence, the TRI has inspired businesses to reduce their toxic releases by 40%.
Now the EPA has weakened the rules, reducing the amount of information communities have available and reducing industry’s incentives to reduce pollution. Representative Pallone has introduced H.R. 1055, the Toxic Right-to-Know Act, to restore the rules. Please join representative Pallone by co-sponsoring this important legislation. New Jersey’s entire Congressional delegation should speak with one voice on this important issue.
