Governor’s Veto Doesn’t Undo Need for Health Reform

Statement of Jen Kim, NJPIRG Advocate, on Gov. Christie’s Veto of Health Benefit Exchange Act

NJPIRG

TRENTON—“Today Gov. Christie brought health reform screeching to a halt in New Jersey.”

“The Governor’s veto doesn’t undo the need for health reform in New Jersey. The Supreme Court decision won’t change the fact that 1.3 million people are uninsured and thousands more are struggling to keep their families covered.”

“The health exchange will bring down costs and make coverage more affordable.”

“Regardless of what happens in the Supreme Court, Gov. Christie should recognize that New Jersey needs more affordable care and the exchange is a great way to help people.”

“The exchange will be a new marketplace in New Jersey that will enable individuals and small businesses to have access to higher quality, more affordable care. These two groups previously lacked the negotiating power that large businesses have when shopping for plans. The exchange changes all that.”

“Small businesses in New Jersey have been struggling to afford health care for their employees and are left with the choice of either not covering them, or not having the employees at all. Bringing small businesses together in one large pool will help them thrive.”

“New Jersey needs to keep moving forward.”
